Buyer Beware...

Today I am using the title buyer beware because all diabetics should be aware of what happened to me and pay attention. When you're dealing with diabetes I am learning (still after 2 years) that you cannot be too cautious or get lazy and not read the labels on EVERYTHING!

So here's what happened about 2 weeks ago. I started getting symptoms of what I thought were the flu. Unknown to me diabetic shock and high sugar produces these same kind of symptoms. Who knew?? So I tell my partner hey "I'm getting the flu and I need some thera-flu or something to get rid of it."  Off to the store he goes and returns with what I asked for.

Okay, I don't know about anyone else but I'm not thinking that "medication" is going to be loaded with sugar besides the obvious types like cough syrups and stuff. So, i grab the bottle and take a measuring cup full. Unknown to me this stuff is loaded with sugar!!! So buyer beware, read the label!!

What happened next was that my blood glucose sky rocketed from what it already was (remember I was already having flu symptoms) to a high of 501!! I proceeded to have teeth chattering chills, deep bone aches, fever, blurred vision and incoherent speech (could not make a sentence that made any sense to anyone).. Yes my friends, I was heading into diabetic shock!

Once I realized what had happened I quickly took one of my metformin tablets and continued to so so every 2 hours and gradually the glucose returned to a normal range. The doctor was surprised that I did not have a stroke or a heart attack and to be honest so am I. I quite felt like I just wanted to die.

So for the moral of this story I just want to urge everyone to read labels. I don't care if its medication or not. Not all medication is safe or will make you feel better. I have learned the hard way that it can do just the opposite and you should most definitely be careful!!

Until next time.....  ~Keep Walking~

Can Coffee Consumption Reduce Risk of Type 2 Diabetes?

On January 13, 2011, UCLA researchers released the results of a study that may explain why coffee reduces the risk of Type 2 diabetes. A number of studies have suggested that coffee is protective against diabetes; however, none of them have explained why. The researchers have discovered

As a diabetic I worry about my feet. I always make sure I buy quality work boots and shoes due to the risks of neuropathy. I don’t like trusting my feet to just any old boot or shoe. It must be comfortable, well made and durable. After all, I plan to walk for many years to come. My brand of choice is Timberland; and Work Boots USA sells this quality brand and many others at really great prices.

I Love You Diabetes But...

Dear Diabetes,

I love you for motivating me to live a healthier life and to take better care of myself. You have probably saved my life. I love it when you talk to me and tell me that I cannot have a candy bar or that I should go for another walk. I love it when you encourage me to lose weight and to eat a proper diet.

But… I must confess to you that I am a cheater. Yes, its true …I cheat on you with bbq sauce, salad dressing and an occasional cookie. I cheat on you each and every week at lunchtime on Saturdays. You see, you might be beating me sometimes but in the end you will NEVER fully win. I will fight you for full flavor, treats and snacks. I will fight you by losing weight and eating better. I will fight you diabetes for MY LIFE. You cannot take it and you will not because I will fight you until my last breath. Each day I get stronger and one day you will not rule my life the way you do now. But instead, you will become a simple reminder that I will keep forever in my mind. Sure I will live by your rules; but not always. You will NEVER win this battle.

So, yes I do love you diabetes but…. I am and always will be a stubborn, motivated and fiesty person… and I WILL cheat on you.

Sincerely,

"The Cheater"

Drive-By Spikes...

My new diabetic term "Drive-By Spike". This is when you go someplace, specifically ask the person at the drive through window if a product is sugar free and they tell you yes but you find out otherwise later.

Have you ever tried to order Un-sweetened Ice Tea at a drive through and the person only hears the sweet Tea portion?? This makes me so frustrated as a diabetic because i cannot have the sugar and do not have time to turn around and go back to fix this. This is known as a Drive-By sugar spike to me. Drinking it thinking you are ok and then checking your sugar level later only to find out that you've been hit by a drive-by!!!

I once asked the manager of a place, "how do you want me to order this so it can be right each time?" He said, "just say Iced Tea because then you are sure to get non-sugar tea." Yeah well that doesn't work either.

My advice is to speak slowly and clearly and say.. "I'll have Iced Tea With NO Sugar" I've had better luck with this and they seem to understand. Of course the people at my place know me now and know that i cannot have sugar so they double check to be sure. I love those ladies. Good luck!!

Variety, The Spice of Type 2 Diabetic Life...

So, I've come to realize something during my time as a diabetic. Variety is an issue in the beginning. What I mean is, it doesn't seem like there is much variety to your diet. With having to read every single label in the grocery store and taking 3 hours to do the grocery shopping it can become quite frustrating.

What I have learned however is that after a time or two at the store reading the labels you don't have to do it as much. You already did and you already determined if that item is ok for you to have or not. Once getting to this point you can quickly finish your shopping and just take the things that you know that you can have right off of the shelf. Thank goodness.

With the extra time you now have, it might be nice to incorporate a bit of variety. You'll be amazed at the choices you have and if you aren't afraid to experiment a bit; you'll be suprised to see what different options you can create. For example, I love yogurt but not the plain kind that tastes like you are eating sour cream. Yuck!!  So, how about a teaspoon of splenda in it to sweeten it a bit or how about mixing some low sugar/carb granola into it. It tastes really good like that and is a great snack for times that you are tired of eating apples and veggies.

The other thing I have determined for myself (check with your doctor this is only my diet and not everyone's) is the fact that I can have regular salad dressing. Yes, I still need to be cautious as to how much i put on the salad but the small amount in relation to the entire day's allowance of sugar and carb grams isn't much. So that means i can have full flavor and cheat just a small bit. In the end I am  full, happy and satisfied with the taste and am not tempted to go and eat a candy bar.

So don't be afraid to experiment a little and don't give up. You can do this too! It just takes a bit of time and effort and you will soon find your comfort zone as a diabetic. As I always say....Any worthwhile journey begins with a single step.
